Funny Story

Emily Henry’s “Funny Story” takes readers on a heartwarming journey through the complexities of relationships, personal growth, and the bittersweet nature of life’s transitions. Known for her ability to blend humor with emotional depth, Henry delivers a novel that is both charming and reflective. Set against the backdrop of a picturesque small town, “Funny Story” follows the life of protagonist Daphne, a woman navigating the turbulent waters of friendships, family dynamics and unexpected romance. Henry’s talent for creating relatable, three-dimensional characters shines through Daphne, whose witty inner monologues and genuine struggles make her an engaging lead. The romance itself, while sweet and believable, sometimes takes a backseat to other plot elements, making it feel less central to the story than it might have been intended. Additionally, some of the supporting characters, though endearing and humorous, lack the depth that would have elevated the story. The novel’s strengths lie in its relatable protagonist, witty dialogue, and exploration of personal growth. For fans of Henry’s previous works, “Funny Story” offers a pleasant addition to her repertoire.

We paired the 2020 Seven Rings Chardonnay from from Napa Valley to enjoy with this charming romance. Although not a Cherry Hill Winery bottle selected by the sweet and thoughtful Miles, we think we got pretty close to the 2020 chardonnay enjoyed by Daphne in “Funny Story”. Pour yourself a glass of this smooth medium-bodied wine with white peach, vanilla, and citrus notes.

“Trust people’s actions, not their words. Don’t love anyone who isn’t ready to love you back. Let go of the people who don’t hold on to you. Don’t wait on anyone that is no rush to get to you.”
