Hooked

Emily McIntire’s Hooked is a dark romance that cleverly balances nods to the classic Peter Pan tale without veering into the overly tacky or cliché. The subtle hints and references add a layer of nostalgia that Disney lovers will appreciate, while still delivering the gritty, mafia-style romance that fans of dark fiction crave. The story will keep you on your toes, with some plot points being predictable but others taking unexpected twists that will leave you questioning who the real villain was—a hallmark of a well-executed narrative.

James, aka Hook, is a standout character. His complexity and moral ambiguity made him far more compelling than Wendy, who at times felt too innocent and whiny for my taste. However, by the end of the story, Wendy comes into her own, showing some much-needed growth and resilience. While we wished her character had been more dynamic throughout, the evolution of her relationship with James was still engaging.

The age gap, revenge plot, and mafia elements are all woven together seamlessly, making this book a captivating read for those who enjoy darker, more intense romances. Hooked manages to strike the right balance between paying homage to a beloved childhood story and delivering the adult thrills and chills that make it impossible to put down.

Pair Hooked by Emily McIntire with the Stags’ Leap Cabernet Sauvignon Napa for a perfect dark romance indulgence. Just as Hook is drawn to Wendy’s tantalizing scent of vanilla, this wine offers a subtle vanilla note that lingers on the palate. The rich aromas of black cherry, blackberry, and plum mirror the intense emotions that swirl between the characters, while the earthy undertones and leather notes evoke Hook’s dangerous world of power, crime, and buried secrets. With a velvety finish, this Cabernet embodies the seductive and complex relationship at the heart of the story, making it an ideal companion for this dark and twisted tale.
